Hannah M. Parkhurst's Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies was one of many private schools in nineteenth-century Newburgh, NY, and is listed in city directories for the 1860s. An advertisement in the 1864-65 directory mentions that, "Miss Parkhurst has had seven years of successful experience in the care of Boarding School in the State, besides several years of teaching in the best schools in Massachusetts." Nothing further is known of Miss Parkhurst or the school; it did not appear in the directories after 1869.
Journals of Lucy Skeel, Fannie Denniston, and Ella Weed kept while they were students at Miss Parkhurst's School in 1864, 1865, and 1868-1869. Lucy Skeel and Ella Weed subsequently graduated from Vassar in 1873. Fannie Denniston's journal reports on a school boat trip to Poughkeepsie May 28, 1865, which included a visit to the Vassar campus with a tour of the grounds by Matthew Vassar.
