Biographical Note
Julia Augusta Schwartz (1873-1957), author of books for girls and children, was born in Albany, NY. She was graduated from Vassar in 1896 and stayed on an additional year to earn an MA in English literature. Apart from six weeks of teaching at Omaha (NE) High School, where she had prepared for college, Schwartz's sole career was writing books for young people, many of which were designed for schoolroom use. One of her first books was Vassar Studies (1899), which, according to the publisher's circular, offered "a faithful impression of the spirit and the personality of modern Vassar." In 1913 Schwartz moved to LaJolla, CA, where she became interested in the conservation efforts of groups such as the Sierra Club. Her other interests, as she reported to the Vassar alumnae office in 1919, included "being a daughter, sister, aunt, neighbor, friend, voter, [and] citizen."
