Biographical Note

Charlotte Barnum (1860-1934) graduated from Vassar College in 1881 and went on to become one of the first three women to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University. Clara Barnum (1866-1953) followed her sister to Vassar and graduated in 1888. After leaving Vassar, she worked with her father, a lexicographer, on the first edition of Noah Webster's dictionary, then worked at the Yale University Library as a genealogist.
