In 1973 the publisher William Jovanovich suggested that McCarthy write an intellectual biography. The work was projected to have three volumes; the first, How I Grew, appeared in 1987. The book dealt with her life from beginnings to her graduation from Vassar, and highlighted her years spent as a teenager in Seattle, Washington.
