Notes: James Ryland Kendrick was a Baptist minister and Vassar Trustee who served one year as acting President (1885). His wife Georgia Avery Kendrick (1848-1922) was Lady Principal at Vassar from 1891 to 1913.
Summary: Papers of James Ryland Kendrick include his letters to his brother Asahel Clark Kendrick, 1832-1884, concerning entrance examination at Brown University and boarding arrangements there, comments on age and life, election results, engagement to Miss Avery, and other personal affairs; letters received concerning his appointment as acting President of Vassar College, 1885; a resolution from the Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie on his resignation from the Church, 1881; his manuscript on Georgia Avery Kendrick include letters of condolence on the death of her husband, 1889; her speeches, prayers, and statements to students as Lady Principal at Vassar, 1901-1909; and her undated manuscripts including two novels. Collection also includes tributes and speeches at the dedication of the Kendrick House on the Vassar Campus, 1927.
